Twelve UK businesses approved to export pork to Mexico
The United Kingdom has successfully negotiated a £19 million trade deal allowing the export of British pork to Mexico, one of the world’s fastest-growing pork markets. This agreement opens new opportunities for twelve businesses across England and Northern Ireland, marking a significant milestone in UK-Mexico trade relations.
Background and Context
After eight years of negotiations led by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the Food Standards Agency, and other key industry stakeholders, British pork producers have gained access to Mexico's expanding market. This new agreement is particularly beneficial for Northern Irish exporters, who have secured dedicated access through targeted negotiations.
Market Implications
The deal is expected to generate £19 million over the next five years, capitalising on Mexico’s pork market, which is growing at an annual rate of 5.4% from 2019 to 2024. British pork is highly regarded for its quality and welfare standards, making it a desirable product in international markets. The agreement allows UK businesses to export not only traditional pork cuts but also offal and other by-products that are popular in Mexican cuisine.
Future Opportunities
This agreement is anticipated to pave the way for further trade opportunities. Once Mexico ratifies the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), tariffs on pork will be reduced, enhancing the competitiveness of British pork. This aligns with the UK government’s broader Trade Strategy, which aims to secure practical deals that deliver swift benefits to UK businesses.
Industry Reactions
Daniel Zeichner, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, highlighted the global demand for British pork, attributing it to the high standards of quality and animal welfare. Jonathan Eckley of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) praised the deal as a testament to the efforts of UK producers in maintaining world-class production standards. Andrew Muir, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing the high-quality standards upheld by Northern Irish producers.
The UK government will continue to collaborate with pork producers and industry bodies to ensure the smooth export of goods to Mexico, supporting the growth and sustainability of the UK pork industry.
