Industry supports 3.2 million jobs, vital for rural economies
The U.S. meat and poultry industry plays a pivotal role in the national economy, contributing $347.7 billion (EUR 301.5) annually and supporting 3.2 million jobs. This sector, encompassing livestock production, feed manufacturing, and transportation, is a cornerstone of both local and national economic health.
Economic Impact
A recent study commissioned by the Meat Institute highlights the substantial economic footprint of the meat and poultry processing industry. The sector alone is responsible for $57.3 billion (EUR 49.8) in direct economic contributions and employs 584,000 individuals. When including indirect and induced effects, the industry's total economic impact swells significantly, underscoring its importance.
Regional Significance
The meat and poultry industry is especially crucial in rural areas, where it often stands as a primary employer. States such as Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa are leaders in economic activity generated by this sector. In particular, Nebraska's third congressional district and Iowa's fourth are among the top regions benefiting from this industry, thanks to their robust processing facilities.
Market Implications
The industry's extensive network of processing facilities is strategically located to ensure a steady supply of livestock and poultry, facilitating efficient operations. Midwestern states, known for high volumes of livestock processing, house numerous facilities, while states like Nevada have fewer due to lower processing volumes. This distribution supports the industry's ability to meet both national and global demand for protein, which is expected to continue growing.
Community Contributions
Beyond economic metrics, the meat and poultry industry invests in its communities through taxes and donations, enhancing local infrastructure such as schools and housing.
Our member companies are often the biggest employers in their rural communities.
Julie Anna Potts, president and CEO of the Meat Institute
The meat and poultry processing industry remains a vital component of the U.S. economy, driving growth and supporting communities across the nation. As global demand for protein rises, its role is poised to expand further.
