Belgium, France, and Germany lead in Turkish anchovy imports
Türkiye has reported significant growth in its anchovy exports, reaching a value of $12.9 million (EUR 11.2) in the first ten months of the year. According to Ahmet Hamdi Gürdoğan, Vice Chairman of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association, the country exported 2,739 tons of anchovies during this period, marking a 20% increase in volume and a 5% increase in value compared to the same period last year.
Export Destinations
Belgium, France, and Germany emerged as the top destinations for Turkish anchovy exports. Belgium imported anchovies worth $3.93 million (EUR 2.54), followed closely by France with $3.79 million (EUR 3.29), and Germany with $1.79 million (EUR 1.55). In total, Türkiye exported anchovies to 19 countries, reflecting the growing demand for this popular seafood.
Market Implications
The increase in export volume and value indicates a robust market for Turkish anchovies, driven by both the quality and abundance of the catch. In Trabzon, a key region for anchovy fishing, the local market has also benefited from the bountiful season. Fishmonger Mehmet Örseloğlu highlighted the affordability and high availability of anchovies, which are sold at prices ranging from 50 to 75 Turkish lira per kilogram. This price point has attracted interest from outside the region, with shipments being sent to other provinces.
Future Prospects
Gürdoğan expressed optimism for the future, aiming to surpass last year's figures in both quantity and value. The ongoing success of the anchovy season in the Black Sea region suggests continued positive trends for Turkish seafood exports.
