Local producers face steep competition from cheaper imports
The Syrian poultry industry is currently navigating a challenging period following a significant policy change by the government. In September 2025, the Syrian government lifted a longstanding ban on frozen chicken imports, aiming to alleviate rising food prices. However, this decision has inadvertently placed local poultry producers under severe financial stress.
Policy Change and Market Impact
The government's decision to allow poultry imports was initially intended to supply meat processors, but inadequate enforcement has led to an influx of frozen chicken into retail markets. This has resulted in a sharp decline in prices, making it difficult for local producers to compete. The domestic poultry industry, which is already burdened by soaring production costs, now faces a critical situation. The cost of producing 1,000 chickens weighing 2.5 tonnes has risen to approximately $4,275 (EUR 3.670), or $1.71 (EUR 1.47) per kilogram, driven by increased energy and feed prices.
Challenges for Local Producers
The policy shift has left nearly 15,000 poultry farmers at risk of bankruptcy. Nizar Saad El-Din, head of the Central Poultry Committee at the Federation of Chambers of Agriculture, highlights the 300% increase in operational costs this year as a major factor. This financial strain is exacerbated by the competition from cheaper imported alternatives, which are flooding the market.
Regulatory Concerns and Smuggling
Despite official assurances that imports were meant solely for industrial processing, there are allegations of smuggling, with significant quantities of foreign chicken reaching consumer markets. Former economic advisor Mazen Deirwan argues for a complete liberalisation of the market, suggesting that addressing the high domestic production costs is more effective than imposing import bans.
The Road Ahead
The Syrian government faces a difficult decision: balancing the need to protect consumers from high food prices while safeguarding a poultry industry crucial for national food security and employment. Without decisive measures to reduce production costs and enhance market oversight, the future of Syria’s poultry sector remains uncertain.
