Germany Faces Surge in Avian Flu Outbreaks

Sharp increase in HPAI cases affects poultry and wild birds

Germany is currently experiencing a significant increase in outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), particularly impacting its poultry and wild bird populations. Since October, the situation has worsened, with 66 outbreaks recorded in commercial poultry and captive birds across nine states.

Rising Cases Across Europe

The Friedrich-Loeffler Institute (FLI), Germany's national veterinary reference laboratory, reports a rapid rise in HPAI cases, especially involving the H5N1 virus serotype. This increase is not isolated to Germany; it is a part of a broader European trend. As of early November, Germany has reported the highest number of outbreaks in Europe, surpassing France, Italy, and Poland.

Impact on Poultry Industry

The escalation in HPAI cases poses significant challenges for the poultry industry, affecting supply chains and potentially leading to increased biosecurity measures. The largest infected flock in Germany comprised approximately 170,000 birds, highlighting the scale of the issue. Such outbreaks could lead to disruptions in poultry supply, influencing market prices and trade dynamics.

Wild Bird Populations at Risk

In addition to commercial poultry, wild birds are also severely affected. Over 400 outbreaks have been reported in Germany's wild bird populations, with cranes being notably impacted. Across Europe, a total of 1,342 outbreaks in wild birds have been confirmed, marking a substantial rise from previous figures.

Urgent Measures Required

The FLI has emphasised the need for urgent and targeted measures to protect poultry populations. The institute has classified the risk to both poultry and wild birds as high, urging stakeholders to implement stringent biosecurity protocols to curb the spread of the virus.

The ongoing situation underscores the need for coordinated efforts across Europe to manage and mitigate the impact of HPAI on both wildlife and the poultry industry. As the winter season progresses, vigilance and proactive measures will be crucial in controlling the outbreaks.
