New market access for thermo-processed poultry and pork

Brazil has successfully negotiated access to the Azerbaijani market for its thermo-processed poultry and pork products, marking a significant milestone in the country's export strategy. This development was announced by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, following discussions with Azerbaijani health authorities.

Market Background

The move to open the Azerbaijani market is part of Brazil's broader strategy to diversify its export destinations. Azerbaijan, a nation in the Caucasus region with a population of about 10.2 million, has been strengthening its trade ties with Brazil. In 2024, Brazilian exports to Azerbaijan exceeded $21 million (EUR 17.9), with meat products being a significant component. The Azerbaijani market is particularly promising for poultry, with per capita consumption at approximately 15 kilograms and expected to grow.

Implications for Trade

The opening of this market is expected to boost Brazil's meat export volumes significantly. In 2021, Azerbaijan's chicken meat consumption reached 141,000 tons, with imports primarily from Ukraine and Russia. With the new agreement, Brazil aims to reclaim its position as a key supplier, especially as Azerbaijani chicken meat imports rose by 46% last year. Although pork consumption in Azerbaijan is relatively low, Brazilian exports have historically dominated this segment.

Strategic Positioning

According to Ricardo Santin, President of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), this market opening reinforces Brazil's status as a reliable partner for Azerbaijan, aligning with local demand trends.

Brazil is recognised worldwide for the quality and safety of its products, which meet the most stringent international standards

Overall, this development not only broadens Brazil's export horizons but also strengthens its foothold in the international meat trade, contributing to the country's economic growth.
