The poultry industry is poised for significant growth, with a projected 22% increase in demand for poultry meat over the next decade. As the industry seeks to meet this demand, efficiency improvements are crucial. A recent symposium highlighted automated gender sorting as a key advancement in enhancing broiler production efficiency.

Growing Demand and Challenges

Global demand for animal protein is anticipated to rise by 14%, with poultry meat leading the charge. Despite the promising growth trajectory, the industry faces challenges, including geopolitical tensions and avian influenza outbreaks. Rabobank senior analyst Nan Dirk Mulder noted the importance of increasing yields to compensate for the loss of agricultural land and the need to do more with less.

Improving Broiler Chain Efficiency

Manual gender sorting has been a traditional method for improving broiler chain efficiency. In Italy, about 90% of broilers are sexed manually, while in France, up to 70% undergo this process. However, manual sorting is labor-intensive and prone to errors. Ceva's Genesys machine offers an automated solution that addresses these issues, enhancing efficiency by sorting broilers by gender, which allows for optimal growth and processing.

Enhancing Carcass Uniformity

The separation of male and female broilers allows for better utilisation of their genetic potential. Males can be grown to larger weights, while females are processed at lighter weights, improving carcass uniformity. Tim van Schaik of JBT Marel highlighted the importance of uniformity in processing, noting that it minimises potential damage and contamination, thereby enhancing hygiene outcomes. With specific product requirements from food service companies, carcass uniformity is crucial for meeting market demands.

The introduction of automated gender sorting represents a significant step forward in broiler production, offering solutions to the challenges of manual sorting and aligning with the industry's need for increased efficiency and uniformity.
